Berkeley Tuolumne Camp (BTC)

Update on the Rim Fire damage

Berkeley, California (Tuesday, October 2, 2013) – After a massive wildfire devastated much of Berkeley Tuolumne Camp in late August, the City has been moving on a number of fronts to respond.

We are protecting and stabilizing the area to prevent further damage to the forest and the river. The work has required close collaboration with contractors and our insurance adjusters, as well as federal, state and local authorities who each have jurisdiction over the site.

The Rim Fire, the third largest in California history, destroyed 92 of the camp’s 111 structures, including all of the main buildings. The amount of destruction has and will continue to require an extensive response by the City. A specialized contractor – already working at the site – has been hired to assess damage, stabilize soil to prevent erosion, remove debris and safely take away hazardous materials like electrical equipment and treated wood. To best secure the site, the work must be done before the critical winter storm season. The site remains closed due to the many issues involved.

We are pursuing a number of paths to cover costs. Our insurance adjusters have been responsive and we are working closely with them to optimize our coverage for the disaster. In addition, the City, local, state and federal authorities have been working together to request a Federal Declaration of Emergency, which may make the site eligible for FEMA relief funds.  This process is complex and will take some time to complete.

As a first step in assessing camp rebuilding, the City will begin a complex and lengthy Master Development Plan process with the U.S. Forest Service in the Fall of 2013.

As for camp in Summer 2014, the City is exploring options for a temporary location. We’ve been meeting regularly with Friends of Berkeley Tuolumne Camp to identify the best options, and we will publicize that information as soon as it is available.
