An Afternoon of Dance and Poetry Performed by Local and International Artists
Berkeley, California (Thursday, December 22, 2005) - A dance performance in a library? PACES, the team of dancer Lucinda Weaver and poet Alan Bern, are joined by local writer and translator, Barbara Villanova, to present collaborative performances of dance and poetry. On Saturday, January 14, 2006, at 4:00 pm, at Berkeley Public’s Central Library, Weaver will present dances and Bern and Villanova will read from Bern's haiku (translated into Italian and Spanish by Villanova) and from his new poetry collection, Waterwalking in Berkeley.
Lucinda Weaver began dancing and Alan Bern began writing poetry as young children in Berkeley, California. In the past year both have performed in bookstores and libraries presenting Bern 's book of poems No no the saddest, and in Switzerland and Italy in Fall 2003. Weaver, a solo performer/choreographer, danced with the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company. She presently lives in Gualala where she is also a physical therapist.
Alan Bern has worked as a librarian in public libraries in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past ten years. In addition to his book, No no the saddest (Daniel & Daniel Publishers, Inc., 2004), his poems have been published in a variety of magazines, as well as a sequence of poems entitled Red is Fugitive published on the Italian literary and cultural web site, Lo Sciacallo (The Jackal).
Barbara Villanova is originally from Italy. She has published short stories in the United Kingdom and in Australia, and some of her stories have been produced for radio and aired on the BBC World Service and National Public Radio. More recently, one of her stories appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle. She is currently working on a children's chapter book.
