BE PREPARED FOR THE STORM SEASON
Actions to Take to Reduce Flooding
Berkeley, California (Friday, January 13, 2006) - The City of Berkeley works hard to prepare for storm seasons including cleaning all of the 2,000 catch basins and 4,000 cross drains in the City. However, both before and during the expected storms, to protect your property and to comply with the law, your help and cooperation is needed. Spread the word! Encourage your friends and neighbors to get prepared also:
IMPORTANT ACTIONS TO TAKE TO REDUCE FLOODING:
Keep gutters, catch basins, and storm inlets clear of leaves and other debris. Dumping debris prevents proper drainage by clogging the storm drain, and it’s illegal. Dispose of plant waste in the City’s Plant Debris bags. For heavy debris, notify Public Works at 644-6620.
Actions to Take to Reduce Flooding
Don’t store material on the street. Stockpiles block the gutters and redirect drainage.
Do not park automobile wheels directly against curbs. This redirects runoff towards houses. Leave room for water to flow down the gutter area.
Place sandbags as water barriers (e.g. driveways, berms, low curbs). Pick up sand bags ahead of time from designated locations listed below.
Inspect and clear creeks and creek banks of debris. You are responsible for maintenance if a creek runs through your property. If you have questions, call Public Works at 644-6620.
Make sure sump pumps are working properly.
Decrease indoor water use during a heavy rainstorm. Excess storm runoff can infiltrate sewer pipes causing sewage overflows.
Clean roof gutters and downspouts. Direct water from roof drains away from buildings and foundations.
Adopt-a-Drain. Call the Department of Public Works at 981-6336 to learn more and to sign up.
For clogged inlets call Public Works Customer Service, 644-6620, 644-6915 (TDD)
Pick up sand bags to temporarily assist in properly directing storm runoff (i.e., when berms, low curbs may be inadequate). Please call Public Works Customer Service, 644-6620, 644-6915 (TDD).
Plant Debris Bags: Never sweep leaves or plant debris into the gutter. Leaves can be bagged in plant debris bags and/or placed in your plant debris container for recycling. Additional plant debris bags may be purchased at a cost of $2.05 per bag at the following locations during normal business hours: 1201 Second Street, Solid Waste Transfer Station and the Local Fire Stations – See addresses listed at end of notice . Please contact the Solid Waste Management Division’s Plant Debris Program at 981-7270 to determine the specific day and week of the month for plant debris bag pickup in your area.
Sandbag Pickup Locations: Berkeley residents may pick up sandbags at various locations throughout the City. The main distribution point is the City’s Corporation Yard at 1326 Allston Way. Local fire stations also have a limited supply of sandbags. Call Fire Administration at 981-3473 to find out if your fire station has sandbags. Proof of Berkeley residency is required and is limited to 10 bags per property. If more bags are required, residents must contact Public Works at 644-6620. Pre-filled sandbags may be exhausted, so please be prepared to fill your own sandbags. Public Works will provide sandbag delivery for elderly and disabled residents. The sand in the bags may also be recycled for use in gardens afterwards.
