2006 BERKELEY CIVIC CENTER ART COMPETITION & EXHIBITION:
OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS THAT LIVE OR WORK IN BERKELEY

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, February 22, 2006) - The City of Berkeley Public Art Program is pleased to announce an Open Call for artists who live or work in the City of Berkeley for a juried exhibition on all five floors of the Dr.  Martin Luther King. Jr. Civic Center at 2180 Milvia Street in Berkeley.   All artists who either live or work in Berkeley are invited to apply. Please visit the Civic Arts web site at http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/civicarts/publicart.htm for information and an application form.

Each artist will be asked to submit five professional quality color slides of their artwork. There is no fee involved to apply. An honorarium of $160 per selected artist will be awarded to exhibit their artwork for one year. Application due by April 18, 2006.

The City of Berkeley Public Art Program in partnership with the Berkeley Art Center in Live Oak Park and Kala Art Institute on Heines Street in Berkeley are organizing and installing the Civic Center Exhibition. All submissions will be sent to the Berkeley Art Center and not to the Civic Arts Office.

A Selection Panel composed of up to three arts professionals, a City staff project architect, a Civic Arts Commissioner, and two community members will review and select approximately 30 art works for display. The Panel is selected for their expertise and representation and are appointed by staff and the Civic Arts Commission. The recommendation of the Selection Panel will then be taken to the Civic Arts Commission for final approval. The artwork will be selected from color slides submitted by the artists at an open, posted meeting.

This exhibition is part of the Public Art Gallery Program of the City of Berkeley Civic Arts Office and Civic Arts Commission. The funds are from the annual 1.5% for art program of the City of Berkeley.
