PUBLIC ART OPPORTUNITY: A MURAL IN TRIBUTE TO MAUDELLE SHIREK
Bay Area Wide Call for Muralists
Berkeley, California (Wednesday, February 22, 2006) - The City of Berkeley Public Art Program is pleased to announce a Call for Artists for a mural in tribute to Maudelle Shirek, a living legend of social justice. The amount of the total commission for the proposed artwork is $38,000. This project is open to all artists who live in the nine Bay Area Counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma. This public art project is intended to depict the life and works of one of Berkeley’s eminent proponents of civil rights and social responsibility, from her childhood in Jefferson, Arkansas, to her journey to Oakland and Berkeley in the 1940’s, and including her many years of direct involvement and community action. Ms. Shirek was an elected member of the Berkeley City Council for over twenty years.
A Selection Panel composed of up to three arts professionals, a City staff project architect, a Civic Arts Commissioner, and two community members will review the applicants. The Panel is selected for their expertise and representation and are appointed by staff and the Civic Arts Commission. Four finalists will be chosen and given an honorarium to develop a model. The chosen artist or artist team will then be forwarded to the Civic Arts Commission for final approval.
The mural will be in Old City Hall near the City Council Chambers and also near the famous mural “The City and its People” painted by the late Romare Bearden. This exhibition is part of the Public Art Program of the City of Berkeley Civic Arts Office and Civic Arts Commission. The funds are from the annual 1.5% for art.
