BERKELEY RECOGNIZES 3RD ANNUAL "MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH"
Open House - May 20, 2006

Berkeley, California (Friday, May 05, 2006) - In recognition that  "May is Mental Health Month" the Berkeley/Albany Mental Health Commission is hosting its 3rd Annual "May Is Mental Health Month" Open House on Saturday, May 20,12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst Avenue, Berkeley.  This year’s theme, “Mind Your Health” focuses on the connection between mental and physical health and the event hopes to raise awareness and understanding of mental health and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses.

Several elected officials are participating in the event. Keith Carson, Alameda County Supervisor, will give the welcome address, and Allan Maris, Mayor of Albany and Mental Health Commissioner, and Darryl Moore, Berkeley City Councilmember and Mental Health Commissioner  will present awards. Sally Zinman, well-known local and national mental health activist and Executive Director of the California Network of Mental Health Clients, is the keynote speaker.  Also headlining the day is Doug Ferrari, comedy legend and the 1984 winner of the San Francisco Comedy Competition. 

 

The Berkeley/Albany “Mind Your Health” event will showcase mental health resources in the community for children, youth, adults, older adults and anyone whose life has been touched by a mental health issue, including family members and loved ones. According to the Surgeon General, nearly one-third of Americans has a mental health disorder, substance abuse disorder or both. 

 

Mental Health Month is observed each May across the country by the National Mental Health Association, the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare and their national partners to raise awareness and understanding of mental health issues.
