Berkeley, California (Monday, May 15, 2006) - In recognition that May is National Bike Commute Month, the City of Berkeley Injury Prevention Program announces "Bike to School Day" on Wednesday, May 17. Students from Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, Willard Middle School, and Longfellow Middle School are encouraged to ride their bikes to school on this day.

Berkeley's Injury Prevention Program encourages overall health and wellness amongst  teens in our community and biking has many benefits.  It is a great way for youth to stay active, helps to reduce air pollution, supports heart health, and a fun way to get fresh air before and after school.

Middle school students recently participated in a bike-safety poster contest and the winning illustrations will be on display at each Middle School through Friday, May 19.  Bicycle riders everywhere should follow these safety tips:

ALWAYS wear your helmet!

Pay attention to the road and what’s happening around you

Be visible- wear reflective clothing and proper lights on your bike

Follow the rules of the road

Be predictable and use hand signals

Co-sponsors include the Berkeley High School Health Center (BHSHC), the California Office of Traffic Safety, and the City of Berkeley Injury Prevention Program.  For more information on bike safety or Bike to School Day visit the following websites:

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
