NOMINATION PERIOD OPENS JULY 17, 2006
Berkeley, California (Thursday, July 06, 2006) - The nomination period for candidates running for local offices in the City of Berkeley opens on Monday, July 17, 2006 and closes on Friday, August 11, 2006. Candidates may take out nomination papers for the following offices: Auditor; Mayor; Council Districts 1, 4, 7 and 8; School Director (3 seats); and Rent Stabilization Board Commissioner (5 seats). All terms are for four years with the exception of the office of the Mayor. The candidate elected as Mayor in 2006 will serve a two-year term. The candidate elected as Mayor in 2008 will serve a four-year term. If running for a council seat, the candidate must have resided in the council district for a period of thirty days prior to the issuing of the nomination paper.
Candidates are required to pay a filing fee of $150 at the time the candidate takes out his/her nomination papers. In lieu of paying a portion or the entire filing fee, a candidate may obtain signatures of support from up to 150 Berkeley registered voters. Each valid signature will reduce the filing fee by $1. Signatures In-Lieu of Filing Fee petition forms may be circulated starting on Friday, June 2, 2006 and must be filed no later than Thursday, July 27, 2006.
