PIEDMONT AVENUE UNDER CONSTRUCTION
July 22 - August 18, 2006
Berkeley, California (Thursday, July 20, 2006) - The City of Berkeley will start reconstruction work this week on Piedmont Avenue, a major access route to the University of California. The project will cover the area between Dwight Way and Bancroft Way.
The City would like to complete most of this work prior to UC Berkeley’s student housing move-in days in mid-to-late August. In order to meet a targeted substantial completion date of August 18, 2006, the contractor is expected to work on the following Saturdays
July 22, 2006
July 29, 2006
August 5, 2006
August 12, 2006
The work on Saturdays will include street excavation, surveying and curb work.
Piedmont has been in a deteriorated condition for some years and was chosen for rehabilitation as part of the City’s 5-Year Street Plan Process. The City general funds provided $766,400 of the $975,400 needed for this project. Another $209,000 came from a Federal Surface Transportation Program Grant.
Because the City does not possess the in-house labor or equipment resources to complete this large complex project, they have hired Gallagher & Burk, Inc., of Oakland, California. This project went through a sequence of different stages, including grant applications, planning, coordination with outside utility companies, preliminary cost estimates, field investigations, surveys, and extensive design prior to the implementation of the project.
The original limits of the project were revised to delete the portion of Piedmont Avenue north of Bancroft Way in response to the UC’s planned Southeast Campus Integrated Projects including seismic retrofit of Memorial Stadium
