CIVIC CENTER ART RECEPTION 2006
Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center Art Exhibition 2006-2007

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, September 20, 2006) - The City of Berkeley is pleased to invite the public to the Civic Center Art Reception 2006 celebrating the new installation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center Art Exhibition 2006-07. The event will take place on September 28, 2006 from 3:00-5:00 p.m., beginning at the Civic Center Outdoor Courtyard by the Peace Bell.

The program will include welcoming remarks by Phil Kamlarz, City Manager, the Honorable Mayor Tom Bates, and City Councilmembers. Please join us for special performances by the Crowden Music Center Quartet and a guided art tour given by the exhibition curators of the new artwork installed in the public areas of the five floors of City Hall. Come by to meet the artists and enjoy the refreshments provided!

The artworks were selected through a juried process. Over 500 slide entries were viewed by the Executive Director of the Berkeley Art Center and the Executive Director of Kala Art Institute. They were assisted by an in-house advisory panel representing the City Manager’s Office, the Mayor’s Office, the Department Directors, the general staff and the Civic Arts Commission. The curators and panel reviewed and selected artworks by 23 artists who either live or work in Berkeley. The mediums for the artworks range from works on paper to mixed media and sculpture.

The Berkeley Civic Center Art Exhibition 2006-2007 is a public art project of the Berkeley Civic Arts Commission in collaboration with Berkeley Art Center and Kala Art Institute. The Civic Center Art Exhibition 2006-2007 celebrates the diversity and richness of the visual arts within Berkeley.

A Curators’ Statement, List of Works and Artists, and photos of the artwork are available for viewing on the Civic Arts website.  Please scroll down to the Public Art Galleries for images of all the artists’ work. For more information about this exhibition please contact Mary Ann Merker, Civic Arts Coordinator at (510) 981-7533. This exhibition is wheelchair accessible and open to the public during normal business hours.
