CITY OF BERKELEY TO AWARD DISASTER SUPPLY CACHES TO 23 NEW NEIGHBORHOODS
As Region Commemorates Twin Anniversaries of Loma Prieta Quake and Oakland-Berkeley Hills Firestorm, Firefighters Demonstrate Use of Community Emergency Equipment

Berkeley, California (Friday, October 13, 2006) - undefined On the 17th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, and continuing its accelerated efforts to make sure residents are ready for the next disaster, the City of Berkeley will announce Tuesday, Oct. 17 the award of Disaster Supply Caches to 23 new neighborhood groups. Combining these caches with those distributed in a 1993 program, and with containers located at Berkeley schools and in neighborhoods, Berkeley will now have a total of 52 emergency caches. 

Firefighters will lead a demonstration for community disaster volunteers in how to properly use fire suppression equipment and other emergency gear included in the caches.

What: City announces 23 new neighborhoods selected to receive community emergency  preparedness caches (list of cache contents attached). Fire Dept demonstrates use of emergency gear.

Who: Mayor Tom Bates, Fire Chief Debra Pryor, Asst. Fire Chief Gil Dong, City Manager Phil Kamlarz, representatives of many of the cache recipient neighborhoods.
