Berkeley, California (Monday, November 13, 2006) - The City of Berkeley is pleased to announce “Generations in Wood”, an exhibition celebrating the works of three generations of woodcarving art by teachers and their students. The art exhibit will be on display at the Addison Street Windows Gallery, 2018 Addison Street, Berkeley from December 3 through January 14, 2007. There will be a sidewalk reception for the artists on Sunday, December 3, 2006 from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. This event is open to the public, free and wheelchair accessible. The Addison Street Windows Gallery is on view 24 hours a day.
Artist, professional woodcarver, and master teacher Sherilyn Tharp brings her heritage of learning and teaching in the time-honored tradition of master artist teaching apprentice. The show represents the wood carved artworks of her two teachers, Berkeley woodcarver and teacher Ben Shaw and wooden toy maker and child psychologist Barbara Mercer, and several of her many students. The collection includes figurative statues, wooden toys, abstract sculptures and masks, as well as functional hand carved wood works of bowls, spoons, and canes.
Tharp has taught woodcarving for 22 years and has taught children art, woodworking, and carving for 16 years. She was awarded a Civic Arts grant in 2002 and 2003 from the City of Berkeley for her Wood Arts program, teaching middle school youth and senior citizens at New Age Academy middle school.
