TAKE A DEEP BREATH: CAL STUDENTS HELP GET THE WORD OUT
Berkeley gets an A from the American Lung Association

Berkeley, California (Friday, March 14, 2008) - Berkeley’s new rules about smoking will get a little more attention starting on Saturday, when Cal students distribute hundreds of signs to businesses and other buildings in the smoke-free areas. Saturday is the last of three “Berkeley Project Days” that connect Cal student volunteers to the Berkeley community.

The window signs, which are being distributed to businesses, are free and available for pick up at the City’s Department of Public Health 1947 Center Street and at the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce at 1834 University Avenue.  Signs will be posted in parks later this spring.

In other smoke-free news:

  • On March 25, the Berkeley City Council is expected to consider expanding the smoking restrictions it passed last November.  Last year, as part of its Public Commons for Everyone Initiative, the City Council restricted smoking within 25’ of buildings open to the public, within 50’ of health facilities and senior centers, on 16 designated streets in commercial areas, and in all parks and recreation areas. The proposed ordinance would allow Council to expand the ban to sidewalks in all commercial zones in Berkeley.
  • The American Lung Association recently recognized Berkeley’s strong tobacco prevention policies and awarded the City an A grade on its Smoke-Free Laws Report Card. The Association considered six different criteria, and gave Berkeley the only “A” for youth access, and one of the only overall A grades in Alameda County.
  • Also at its March 25 meeting, the Berkeley City Council will recognize Andronico’s grocery stores for the decision to discontinue selling tobacco products in Berkeley, and the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s new policy making its Berkeley campus smoke- and tobacco-free.
