EMERGENCY SUPPLY CACHES TO BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS
First in the nation program gives emergency supplies to U.C. students living in sororities, fraternities and co-ops

Berkeley, California (Tuesday, March 18, 2008) - University of California, Berkeley students who live in fraternities, sororities and co-ops are now being equipped with emergency training and supplies for responding to earthquakes and other natural catastrophes, thanks to a Bay Area Urban Area Security Initiative (Office of Homeland Security) grant received by the City of Berkeley. This is the first program of its kind to train and equip students, and will become a model for other institutions across the country.

WHAT: Berkeley city and campus representatives will announce the placement of emergency caches, in the form of storage containers filled with disaster response supplies. A sample cache, including a generator, helmets and goggles, fire extinguishers, portable lights and 2-way radios will be on display. There will be a short program and all speakers and other representatives will be available for interviews.

WHO: Deputy Fire Chief Gil Dong; Dr. Grahaeme A. Hesp, director of fraternity and sorority life for Campus Life and Leadership; and representatives from the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Council, the Berkeley Student Cooperative, and the American Red Cross Bay Area
