NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK: THE FUTURE IS NOW!
Berkeley, California (Tuesday, May 13, 2008) - The public is invited to attend celebrations of National Public Works Week during May 18 – 24, 2008. This year’s theme is “The Future is Now” and there will be events at City Hall and Public Works sites, and an exhibit of vehicles outside Council Chambers before the City Council proclamation honoring Public Works Week.
The American Public Works Association initiated this annual event in 1960 as an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of public works in community life, and recognition of the employees who provide these services. Public Works operations include a wide range of ongoing, seasonal and special projects, from parking meters, street maintenance, and storm and wastewater systems, to refuse and recycling, municipal building management, and transportation planning.
“The services that our employees provide the community are an integral part of the lives of our residents, business members and visitors on a 24-hour basis everyday,” said Claudette Ford, Public Works Director. “We’re pleased to have this opportunity to share information with the public, and acknowledge the accomplishments of our staff.”
