ALCOHOL ARGUMENT PRECIPITATES STABBING

Berkeley, California (Friday, November 14, 2008) - At 11:49pm on Thursday, November 13, 2008, the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) got a 911 call from the clerk of a liquor store in the 1200 block of University Avenue who reported a stabbing.

According to the clerk, the suspect, Richard Allan Jacobs, 55 of Richmond, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair for mobility, got enraged after the clerk refused to sell him additional alcohol. The clerk denied selling to Jacobs, as he was already obviously intoxicated. Another customer, a 52-year-old Berkeley man, intervened and attempted to calm the argument. Jacobs turned his anger on the customer and stabbed him in the stomach. The victim customer struck Jacobs in the head with a bottle. An acquaintance of Jacobs, a 58-year-old Berkeley woman, who is also disabled and in a wheelchair became involved and tried to intervene in the chaos, but Jacobs stabbed her also.

Within seconds of the clerk’s call, BPD patrol officers were on the scene and arrested Jacobs who was still there. The two stabbing victims were transported to a trauma center. The male victim underwent emergency surgery but is expected to survive. The woman was treated for a stab wound to the leg.

Jacobs was booked into Santa Rita County Jail for two counts of 245(a)(1) PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
