TWO SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN 10TH ST. SHOOTING
Berkeley, California (Monday, January 12, 2009) - At 8:15 PM on January 11, 2009, Berkeley Police responded to a report of a verbal argument on the 1100 block of Parker St. As they moved into the area gunshots were heard fired somewhere on the 2500 block of 10th St.
Responding officers discovered an adult African-American male victim who had been hit several times by gunfire lying on the sidewalk on the west side of the Bank of America Parking lot (2546 San Pablo Ave). The Berkeley Fire Department responded and transported the unidentified victim to the Alameda County Hospital (ACH) for treatment.
A search for the shooter(s) was initiated using assets on loan from the California Highway Patrol (helicopter) and the Richmond Police Department (K-9). At 9:28 PM, Berkeley Resident Rhonda Reid, 47 was arrested near the scene of the crime.
Based on information gained throughout the night Homicide Detectives quickly deduced that a second suspect might be associated with an address on the 2700 block of Wallace St. A search warrant was served at that address this morning at 6:43 AM. The second suspect, later identified as Berkeley Resident Lee Freddy Green, 50 became aware that he was wanted for questioning and turned himself in at the Berkeley Public Safety Building at 10:50 AM.
The victim has been identified as William Payton 37 of Berkeley. Payton is listed in critical condition.
Green and Reid have both have been arrested for attempted murder and are currently being held without bail.
