CITY OF BERKELEY INVITES COMMUNITY COMMENT ON CITYWIDE POOLS OPTIONS
A workshop will be held Saturday, January 24 for public to comment on three Citywide pool options laid out in Preliminary Draft Citywide Pools Master Plan

Berkeley, California (Friday, January 16, 2009) - The public is invited to a final community meeting to comment on three options for the future renovation and development of aquatic facilities in Berkeley. Public comments will be incorporated into a Draft Master Plan to be submitted to the Berkeley City Council and the Berkeley Unified School District Board.

WHAT: Community Workshop on the Preliminary Draft of the Citywide Pools Master Plan
WHEN: Saturday January 24 from 10 a.m.-noon
WHERE: James Kenney Recreation Center, 1720 8th Street, Berkeley

Over the past five months, a 10-member task force has worked with City of Berkeley and School District staff, as well as architecture and pool experts, to develop a Preliminary Draft Citywide Pools Master Plan. Key topics include the Warm Water Pool; King, Willard and West pools; and options for new swim facilities.

At Saturday’s meeting, the Task Force will present the preliminary draft of the Citywide Pools Master Plan and ask the community to provide input on the three pool options. Pool options currently outlined include:

Option 1
King Pool:  Construct new 25-yard x 25-meter instructional/competition pool
Willard Pool: Renovate existing lap pool and convert dive pool into shallow play pool with slide
West Campus Pool: Construct a single 2,790 sq. ft., 92-Degree Indoor Warm Water Pool

Option 2
King Pool:  Same as Option 1
Willard Pool:  Same as Option 1
West Campus Pool:
   Construct one 2,790 sq. ft., 92-Degree Indoor Warm Water Pool and 
   One 2,600 sq. ft., 86-degree Indoor Instructional/Lap Pool

Option 3
King Pool:  Same as Option 1
Willard Pool:  Same as Option 1
West Campus Pool:
   Construct one 1,200 sq. ft., 92-Degree Indoor Warm Water Pool and 
   One 4,190 sq. ft., 86-degree Indoor Instructional/Lap Pool
