POLICE GET TOUGH ON DRUNK DRIVERS - CHECKPOINT SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 20, 2009

Berkeley, California (Friday, February 20, 2009) - The Berkeley Police Department’s (BPD) Traffic Bureau is warming up the breathalyzer and prepping their citation books in anticipation of a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoint which will be held Friday, February 20, 2009 between 10 PM and 2 AM on University Avenue at Bonar Street.

This is the second checkpoint of the year, which is aimed at keeping our community safer by taking impaired drivers off our roadways. The department’s first checkpoint of the year (January 2, 2009) was deemed a resounding success. The officers who worked that detail were responsible for checking 491 cars, making three arrests for DUI, issuing 86 citations, and towing 7 cars.

Sergeant Robert Rittenhouse, BPD Traffic Bureau Supervisor warned, “There is one alcohol related fatality/crash every 40 minutes in the United States. This operation provides the department with a valuable way to both educate the community and remove impaired drivers from our roadways.

Funding for this enforcement program comes as the result of a recent $174,846 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
