BERKELEY MARINA EARNS CLEAN MARINA CERTIFICATION
Berkeley, California (Friday, March 06, 2009) - After a thorough review and inspection process, the Berkeley Marina was recently certified as a “Clean California Marina” by the Clean Marinas California Program, an industry-sponsored partnership of private and municipal marinas and yacht clubs in the state.
The program encourages marinas to implement voluntary policies and practices to protect the environment by preventing or reducing pollution in our state’s waters. To earn the certification, marinas must meet strict requirements in areas such as storm water runoff; solid, liquid and fish waste; boat owner education; petroleum containment; marina operations; topside boat maintenance and cleaning and emergency procedures.
“We thank our Waterfront Manager, John Mann, our Harbormaster, Ann Hardinger, and the Marina team for their stewardship and management of our marina and its water quality,” said William Rogers, director of the City of Berkeley’s Parks, Recreation and Waterfront department. “We’re committed to reducing the environmental impact of our Marina operations and to setting an excellent standard of service to the Bay Area’s boating community.”
The California Department of Boating and Waterways, the Recreational Boaters of California and the Marina Recreation Association of California support the Clean Marinas program, which educates, trains and encourages boaters, vendors, and employees to protect the environment and water quality through the use of environmentally sound “best management practices."
