The two painters address the genre of portraiture from different perspectives. Whereas Matthews has deliberately removed her subjects from their literal surroundings, she has painted symbolic elements around the portraits that encode a representative home. Esherick has done the reverse, portraying her subjects in the context of their working environment, including objects from the workplace.
Matthews subjects are mostly people she met during her travels in Niger, West Africa. Eshericks subjects include fellow artists in residence housed in a former gothic church in Charlotte, North Carolina, painted on panels shaped like gothic windows, and portraits of owners and managers of small businesses along Shattuck Avenue, in downtown Berkeley.
Looking at the underlying structure of bones and muscle of the faces they paint, these two artists also convey the character and personality of their subjects. Both see portraiture as a means of honoring and conveying stature and dignity to their subjects.
The Addison Street Windows Gallery is a project of the Public Arts Program of the City of Berkeley in cooperation with the Civic Arts Commission.
