FATHER CHARGED WITH MURDER OF FIVE MONTH OLD SON
Berkeley, California (Wednesday, May 20, 2009) - On May 15, 2009, at approximately 4:41 p.m. the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) received a 9-1-1 a call about a choking infant in a home on the 1300 block of Ward Street. Officers responded to the scene and helped the infant’s father by assisting with CPR. Berkeley Fire Paramedics transported the infant, a 5-month-old boy, to Children’s Hospital of Oakland where he later died of his injuries.
Based on information provided to BPD detectives by Children’s Hospital medical staff, the infant’s father, Lamar Franklin, 21, of Berkeley, was arrested for Child Abuse.
On May 19, 2009, Franklin was charged with Murder, Assault Resulting in the Death of a Child Under Eight, and Assault With a Deadly Weapon (other than a firearm) by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
This tragic event is the City of Berkeley’s fourth Homicide of the year.
