UP FROM THE COAST
Berkeley, California (Wednesday, May 27, 2009) - Prints and paintings by six artists from the Monterey Bay area can be seen at the Addison Street Windows Gallery from June 3, 2009 through July 12, 2009. These artists have created a range of expressions in figurative and landscape paintings and monotypes. This exhibition is free, open to the public and wheelchair accessible. The show can be viewed 24 hours a day from the sidewalk in front of 2018 Addison Street.
Judy Anton's figurative paintings work to "isolate an emotional truth," what has often been described as "making the invisible visible."
Carol Bowie, an award winning Santa Cruz County artist, takes an improvisational approach to her figurative pieces, infusing emotion into her monotypes.
Susan Cartwright's "Avian Series" are monotypes based on the ancient Egyptian portrayal of one's soul in the afterlife as a bird with a human head.
Erika Gakovich paintings are a tribute to her relationship with sky, weather and light.
Sefla Joseph is a figurative artist, currently working in acrylic, oil, and monotype. She paints almost entirely from imagination. She says, "My intention is to explore the emotional similarities we share with each other, and from this understanding to foster compassion in my own heart and in others."
Jayne McCreadie finds the Monterey Bay area and the Big Sur coast to be unsurpassed in beauty and endlessly inspiring as a source for artistic expression. After thirty three years and many mediums, she finds a new appreciation for these landscapes through the discipline of monotype printing.
