Paintings and Original Posters: Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse Celebrates New Home at the Addison Street Windows Gallery
Berkeley, California (Monday, August 10, 2009) - Moved by Tradition, an art exhibition featuring artwork inspired by traditional and folk music is being shown at the Addison Street Windows Gallery from August 25 through September 7, 2009. This exhibition celebrates the newest Addison Street neighbor, the famous Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse. This exhibition is from their collection of art, inspired by music presented at the Freight over the last 41 years. The exhibition can be viewed 24 hours a day from the sidewalk on Addison Street, and it is free and wheelchair accessible.
The show includes original watercolors and oil paintings of musical scenes and musicians by Tracy Grisman. Music posters in the exhibit include commemorative grand opening posters by Hannah Regier. Stephen Curls' sketches of musicians are also included, as are photographs of the building's reconstruction.
The Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, the oldest established full-time folk and traditional music venue west of the Mississippi River, will open their new performance and education facility at 2020 Addison Street in Berkeley's Downtown Arts District on August 27, 2009. The Freight moves in next door to the Addison Strett Windows Gallery after nearly two years of reconstruction to the Stadium Garage building, a project which included the addition of a living green roof.
The Addison Street Windows Gallery is a project of the Civic Arts Program of the City of Berkeley in cooperation with the Civic Arts Commission.
