DETECTIVES USE DNA HIT TO APPREHEND CARJACKER
Berkeley, California (Thursday, October 15, 2009) - Using DNA recovered at the scene of a series of 2008 Carjacking/attempts, City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Detectives served an early morning search warrant on the 5900 Block of Camden Street, in Oakland. Taken into custody was:
Paul Anthony McGruder, 8-18-57, of Oakland
On 12-30-08 at approximately 10:30am, a black male adult suspect approached a lone female victim in the parking lot of Whole Foods Market at 3000 Telegraph Avenue. The suspect brandished a handgun and ordered the victim into the car. Once inside the car, the victim screamed and the suspect punched her in the face and attempted to take control of her car. The victim fought back stabbing the suspect in the neck with a pair of scissors, which caused the suspect to flee the car.
Undeterred, the suspect attempted a second carjacking in the parking lot of Whole Foods Market before fleeing West on Webster Street. A few minutes later the suspect successfully carjacked a male victim on Halcyon Court and fled in his 2008 Subaru Outback.
McGruder was later booked into the Alameda County Jail on three counts of Carjacking and one count of Kidnapping during the commission of a carjacking.
