FREE PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMS
New Grant-Funded Kindergarten Programs through First Five Alameda County
Berkeley, California (Monday, May 24, 2010) - Berkeley residents who are getting their young children ready for kindergarten can take advantage of three new programs this summer. The programs are offered by the City of Berkeley’s recreation division and funded by First 5 Alameda County. Some sessions may have already begun, but there are still openings. Free Pre-K Power Play Class
Over the course of a 10-week session, children ages 3-4.9 years old build literacy, problem-solving, and social skills such as sharing and impulse control. Classes are ongoing at two locations:
Frances Albrier Community Center, 2800 Park St: Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
James Kenney Community Center, 1720 8th St.: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Classes are taught by early childhood professionals. Bilingual-Spanish speaking teachers are available. Priority for enrollment: 1) Low-income South & West Berkeley residents; 2) Low-income Berkeley residents; 3) All Berkeley residents.
To register, visit "Pre-Kindergarten Programs" under the "What's New" section of www.cityofberkeley.info/parks. Fill out and return the registration form and the income verification form. Forms can be dropped off at the Francis Albrier Community Center, the James Kenney Community Center, or the Recreation Office on the First Floor of 1947 Center St.
Free Pre-K Drop in Program
This program serves children 2-5 years old by providing a safe, fun, and exciting place for parents and care-givers to play with their children. Staff will facilitate with ideas and techniques for skill building. One parent or caregiver is required for every three children.
Martin Luther King Community Center, 1730 Oregon St.: Monday-Friday, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
There is no income requirement for the Drop-In Program; however, parents must sign a waiver to participate.
Free Parent Education Workshop
This workshop is for parents of children ages 1-5 years old, and focuses on what parents need to know to help their children be ready for kindergarten. Sessions will cover parenting skills, nutrition, and use of community resources. Bilingual-Spanish speaking teachers available.
This program is ongoing and offered in 10-week sessions at various community centers in South and West Berkeley on Thursdays, 6:15-7:45 p.m. There is no income requirement for the Parenting Workshops.
