BPD OFFICERS TO WEAR TUTUS FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS FUNDRAISER

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, October 06, 2010) - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Motor Officers along with their partners from City of San Jose Police (SJPD) Department and deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) will be wearing tutus for an upcoming motorcycle ride to benefit Special Olympics of Northern California.

BPD Traffic Bureau Motor Officer Brandon Smith, said, “We are calling the event TheTutu Ride for Special Olympics.” The idea for the event grew out of a group of officers who attended the 2009 Law Enforcement Torch Run International Convention for Special Olympics. The group returned home and began planning for the 2010 (this year’s) convention”. Brandon went on to say, “A few of us are avid motorcycle riders off duty and decided that we would make it a fundraiser to raise awareness for Special Olympics by riding our own motorcycles to the convention which is being held in Long Beach, CA”. Brandon then challenged the group, “If we raise $10,000, I will wear a tutu on my Harley for the entire ride”. Other officers and deputies have decided they too will wear tutus during the ride.”

The tutu making event will take place at the BPD Traffic Bureau Office located at 841 Folger Avenue in Berkeley on Friday October 8, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The motorcycle ride is open to the public and those riding will be encouraged to wear a tutu or attach some tutu material to their motorcycle during the ride. The event is a two day ride starting at the California Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento on Monday, October 18, 2010 and ending in Long Beach California on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. Officer Smith added, “We have only raised a little more than $4,000 so far for the ride but are keeping our fingers crossed to reach the $10,000 mark”. For more information about the ride, people can visit www.tuturide.com. Members of BPD have participated in several Special Olympics events this year and have raised over $10,000 as a result.
