SECOND SESSION OF PLAY CONNECTS PARTICIPANTS WITH LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT

Berkeley, California (Friday, February 18, 2011) - A new program called the Police and Life Academy For Youth (PLAY) will start its second  session on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The first session was held from September to November 2010. Some of the diversity of topics that are explored by City of Berkeley teenagers during the 11 week program are an introduction to criminal justice and policing, conflict resolution, emergency preparedness, health, fitness and career opportunities.

In July of 2010, the Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) awarded a $25,000 grant to PLAY.  The fund provides grants to community service programs that enhance the economic, social or cultural well being of City of Berkeley community members.  PLAY is a partnership between the University of California Police Department (UCPD), the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD), and the Berkeley Boosters.  PLAY connects law enforcement agencies with the Berkeley Police Activities League (PAL), the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) as well as the City of Berkeley business community.

This grant will also be used to hire University of California, Berkeley student interns to help mentor the students with contributions such as facilitation, marketing skills and coordination within the PLAY program.

BPD Chief Michael K. Meehan says, “It was very rewarding to be involved in the culmination of the first PLAY session. The pride that these young people exuded during the graduation was memorable for all of us. Connecting with youth to contribute to their success is one of the most important things we can do as a community and as members of our respective police departments.”

Members of the media are invited to attend the start of the second PLAY session which will be held in the multi-purpose room from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Ronald T. Tsukamoto Public Safety Building, 2100 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Berkeley, CA.
