SEPTEMBER 29: DRUG TAKE BACK DAY
Drop off old medications, safely and anonymously

Berkeley, California (Tuesday, September 11, 2012) - The public is invited to bring any unneeded prescription medications to the Berkeley Public Safety Building and dispose of it, anonymously and safely. The drop-off location is in downtown Berkeley, and directly across the street from the Saturday Farmers’ Market.

Any member of the public can take advantage of this program, and no identification is required. This event is part of the National Take Back Initiative, a Drug Enforcement Administration program designed to reduce the amount of expired, unwanted, or unused controlled substances in the community.

Many medications are not accepted back by pharmacies, and Drug Take Back days have become an effective way to safety dispose of them. By turning in old medication, residents reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, overdose, theft and abuse, and keep poisons out of the environment.

WHAT: National Take Back Initiative
WHEN: Saturday, September 29, 2012

10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: Public Safety Building

 How It Works

  • Residents bring any medication to the Public Safety Building for disposal.
  • No identification is required and no records are kept.
  • Residents can keep or dispose of the containers.
  • No needles, please.
  • Because pharmacies generally cannot accept them, residents are encouraged to dispose of controlled substances such as Vicodin, Percocet, OxyContin, and Codeine; stimulants such as Adderall, Ritalin, and Dexedrine; and sedatives and tranquilizers.

For more information regarding types of medication and collection sites check www.dea.gov or call the Berkeley Police Department at (510) 981-5806.
