PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WILDFIRES
As temperatures rise, wildfire risk increases

Berkeley, California (Monday, June 05, 2017) - As summer begins, Berkeley hills residents should remove vegetation from around their homes to create safe, defensible space that can help protect their homes from wildfire.

Residents can also get ready for potential wildfires by using City resources, including online preparation guides, vegetation pick-up services in the hills and a workshop Thursday at Northbrae Community Church:

Wildfire Preparedness Forum
Thursday June 8 at 7:15 p.m.
Northbrae Community Church
941 The Alameda
Berkeley, CA 94707

To protect homes near wildland areas, residents should

  • Clear shrubs away from the sides of their homes;
  • Prune branches and anything hanging over or growing within ten feet of chimneys and stovepipes; and
  • Clear their property of leaves, pinecones and dead tree branches.

The Fire Department has created a detailed guide on protecting your home.

The City helps hills residents safely remove flammable plant debris by hauling vegetation placed in compostable bags from the side of the road.  View the Forestry Division's brochure to see bagging instructions, a list of neighborhoods served and the collection schedule that starts June 5. The City crew will also be chipping branches in affected neighborhoods.

In the event of a fire in the hills, having an evacuation plan can be critical. Decide on evacuation routes, meeting places, and create communication plans using the City's Wildfire Evacuation page.
