JANUARY
January 25 - Mechanics Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested- On Monday, January 25, at 1:39 p.m., Patrol officers from the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) responded to the Mechanics Bank on the 2300 block of Shattuck Avenue for a reported robbery which had just occurred.
January 15 - SWEARING-IN CEREMONY FOR POLICE CHIEF MICHAEL MEEHAN - The City of Berkeley is pleased to announce the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Police Chief Michael K. Meehan on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
January 13 - Community Crime Alert Burglary Suspects Caught On Tape (Update) On September 30, 2009, the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) asked for the community’s help in identifying the suspects pictured below who were believed to be responsible for two daytime residential burglaries.

DECEMBER
December 31 - Berkeley Police Prepare for New Year's Day DUI Checkpoint - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) will be conducting a Driving Under the Influence/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, January 1, 2010. The checkpoint will occur during the evening hours on San Pablo Avenue at Camelia Street in West Berkeley.
December 21 - Sketch Released In Southeast Berkeley Shooting - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) is asking for the community’s help in identifying the suspect pictured below who is responsible for an attempted robbery and an assault with a deadly weapon.
December 15 - Detectives Seek Public's Help With 2009's Only Unsolved Homicide - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Homicide Detail is asking for the community’s help in closing its only remaining unsolved homicide for 2009.
December 1 - Community Crime Alert Detectives Seek Community's Assistance in Southeast Berkeley Robbery - The Berkeley Police Department (BPD) is seeking the Community’s assistance in identifying two suspects involved in a street robbery and shooting Sunday evening in southeast Berkeley.
NOVEMBER
November 19 Police Team Up For Toys For Tots - The Berkeley Police Department (BPD) will again be teaming up with the U.S. Marine Corps Foundation Toys For Tots program this year. As in years past, toys will be distributed to Berkeley children who would not otherwise receive toys during the holidays. The department expects to distribute about 3000 new toys.
OCTOBER
October 15 Whole Foods Carjacker Arrested - Using DNA recovered at the scene of a series of 2008 Carjacking/attempts, City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Detectives served an early morning search warrant on the 5900 Block of Camden Street, in Oakland.
SEPTEMBER
September 29 Berkeley Police Celebrate Turkey Ride’s 25th Anniversary; Police to Deliver Hundreds of Holiday Meals On Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 6:00am, members of the Berkeley Police Department (BPD), Berkeley Boosters
Association, University of California Police Department (UCPD), and community members will gather in front of Old City Hall to continue a 25 year-old tradition.
September 23 Police Close The Books On Two Attempted Rape/Burglary Cases The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) is announcing the closure of two Attempted Rape/Burglary cases from earlier this year. On August 4, 2009 Sex Crimes Detectives arrested Ferhat Djoumi
September 17 Drunk Drivers Beware! The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) will be conducting a Driving Under the Influence/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, September 18, 2009.
September 7 Cops Get Back in the Saddle for Families in Need- On Wednesday morning, September 9, 2009, 21 current and retired members of the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) and their guests will embark on the 26th Annual Turkey Ride. This year’s fundraising event will take the cyclists and their 7-person support crew from Daly City to Cambria, Calif. (Hearst Castle).
September 4 COMMUNITY HELP NEEDED TO FIND DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED WOMAN - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) is urging the community to be on the look out for Eva Pena, a woman with severe developmental disabilities.
AUGUST
August 17 BPD Welcomes New Traffic Substation- The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) is pleased to announce the new home of the BPD Traffic Bureau. All BPD Traffic and Parking Bureau operations will now be located at 841 Folger Street (at the corner of Folger and 7th Streets).
August 14 Suspect Arrested for 2006 Murder - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Homicide Detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with a 2006 murder. The Alameda County District Attorney has charged Bahsson Carl Smith, 28, of Berkeley with one count of 187(a) PC for the February 2006 shooting death of Keith Stephens.
JULY
July 20 Police Make Arrest in Explosives Case - The City of Berkeley Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 "hang-up" call and ultimately removed chemicals and explosives from a Grizzly Peak home and arrested the resident. (more)

June 29 CCA S. Berkeley Fires Likely Arson - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) responded to a series of fires on the 1700 and 1800 block of Woolsey Street in South Berkeley that appear to have been intentionally set. (more)
June 25 Police Prepare for DUI Checkpoint - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) will be conducting a Driving Under the Influence/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, June 26, 2009. (more)
June 09 COMMUNITY CRIME ALERT - Help Needed To Identify Possible Suspect Who Drops Phone - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Property Crimes detectives are asking for the community’s help to identify a possible suspect in a series of residential burglaries. (more)
June 09 WANTED - Homicides in West Berkeley/North Oakland - Rafael Campbell, 24, of Oakland (pictured below) is still wanted in connection with the May 16, 2009 murder of Charles Davis, 25, of Berkeley at Allston Way and Tenth Street in West Berkeley. (more)
June 08 South Berkeley Shooting Injures Two - Two children were injured this morning when the home they were sleeping in was struck by gunfire. The children, girls ages 3 and 6 years old, are being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital. (more)

May 26 Third Suspect Arrested in West Berkeley/North Oakland Homicides - On May 25, 2009, at 1:42 a.m., the City of Berkeley Police Department received a Teletype from the Federal Bureau of Investigations advising that Samuel Flowers had been arrested for Grand Theft, Petty Theft, and Resisting Arrest in Bal Harbour, Florida. May 23 Suspects Identified in West Berkeley/North Oakland Homicides The City of Berkeley is offering a $45,000 reward, and Bay Area Crime Stoppers is offering an additional $2,000 reward, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects responsible for the deaths of three men in Berkeley and North Oakland. May 21 $47,000 Reward Offered In Berkeley Homicides - The City of Berkeley is offering a $45,000 reward, and Bay Area Crime Stoppers is offering an additional $2,000 reward, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects responsible for the deaths of three men in Berkeley and North Oakland. May 21 $17,000 Reward Offered In Berkeley’s Second Homicide of the Year - The City of Berkeley is offering a $15,000 reward, and Bay Area Crime Stoppers is offering an additional $2,000 reward, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects responsible for the death of a Southwest Berkeley resident. May 20 Father Charged With Murder of Five Month Old Son - On May 15, 2009, at approximately 4:41 p.m. the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) received a 9-1-1 a call about a choking infant in a home on the 1300 block of Ward Street. (more)
May 20 Police Pretender/Sexual Assault Suspect Arrested - A suspect who alleged he was an undercover police officer when he sexually assaulted a woman in the City of Berkeley has been arrested. (more)
May 17 Homicide Suspects Arrested Following Pursuit - Two homicide suspects were arrested Saturday evening after leading City of Berkeley Police (BPD) officers on a pursuit through West and South Berkeley, then onto the streets of North Oakland. The pursuit began when a BPD officer spotted a Cadillac occupied by four male suspects fleeing the scene of a shooting. (more)
May 14 Impaired Drivers Beware - Checkpoint on May 15, 2009 - As part of a grant received from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) has scheduled another Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Driver’s License (DL) checkpoint. (more)

May 05 $17,000 Reward Offered In South Berkeley Vehicular Manslaughter - The City of Berkeley is offering a $15,000 reward, and Bay Area Crime Stoppers is offering an additional $2,000 reward, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects responsible for a felony hit and run in which the victim died as a result of his injuries. Mar 31: Last Three Suspects in Custody in Home Invasion Robbery - On Monday, March 30, 2009 City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Detectives in conjunction with officers from Richmond and the El Cerrito Police Departments served a search warrant (more)
Mar 16: Fifth Suspect Sought in Heinous Home Invasion Robbery - Following last Wednesday’s successful warrant service, Detectives have learned the identity of a fifth suspect involved in the late February Berkeley home invasion robbery.
Mar 12: Suspects Arrested in Heinous Home Invasion Robbery - Arrests Made But Torture Suspect and Others At Large- On Wednesday, March 11, 2009 City of Berkeley Police (BPD) Detectives conducted early morning search warrants at 4 separate locations in the Cities of San Pablo and Richmond.
Mar 06: Community Crime Alert - Community Asked to Help Identify Sexual Predator's Clothing - Following the February 20, 2009 sexual assault that occurred on the 2200 block of Haste Street, the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) recovered three articles of clothing believed to have been dumped by the suspect in an effort to change his appearance (pictured below). BPD is asking the community to help us identify the suspect based on the previously released sketch and the articles of clothing.
Mar 03: Community Crime Alert Sexual Predator Strikes Twice Over the Weekend - On Saturday, February 28, 2009 Berkeley Police Department Patrol Officers responded to two separate reports of sexual assault, which detectives believe are linked to the ongoing series in the South Campus Area. (more)

Feb 25: Arrest Made in 2006 Homicide at House Party - A little over three years from the crime, City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Homicide detectives have secured an arrest and charges for the suspect responsible for the 2006 murder of

Feb 23: Community Crime Alert - Sexual Predator Finds 12th Victim Detectives Seek Public’s Help in Identifying Suspect - On Friday, February 20, 2009 at approximately 1 AM, City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Patrol Officers responded to the 2100 block of Haste Street near the University of California’s South Campus for a report of sexual battery that detectives believe is linked to the ongoing series. Feb 20: POLICE GET TOUGH ON DRUNK DRIVERS - CHECKPOINT SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 20, 2009 - The Berkeley Police Department’s (BPD) Traffic Bureau is warming up the breathalyzer and prepping their citation books in anticipation of a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoint which will be held Friday, February 20, 2009 between 10 PM and 2 AM on University Avenue at Bonar Street. Feb 17: Patrol Officers Take Sexual Predator Off the Streets - On Thursday, February 12, 2009 City of Berkeley Police Officers responded to a report of a prowler who was peering into a residence on the 2000 block of Parker Street. One of the victims discovered the prowler using a ladder to peep into his girlfriend’s second floor apartment window. (more)

Jan 28: Community Crime Alert Help Needed to Catch A Predator - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Sex Crimes detectives need the community’s help to nab a predator. Detectives are tracking a series of assaults in which the suspect is focusing on college-aged women who are wearing skirts. (more)
Jan 12: Two Suspects Arrested In 10th St. Shooting - At 8:15 PM on January 11, 2009, Berkeley Police responded to a report of a verbal argument on the 1100 block of Parker St. As they moved into the area gunshots were heard fired somewhere on the 2500 block of 10th St. Responding officers discovered an adult African-American male victim who had been hit several times by gunfire lying on the sidewalk on the west side of the Bank of America Parking lot (2546 San Pablo Ave). Jan 12: Berkeley Police Investigate 10th St. Shooting - At 8:15 PM on January 11, 2009, Berkeley Police responded to a report of a verbal argument on the 1100 block of Parker St. While looking for the people involved in the argument Officers heard a series of gunshots that they believed were fired somewhere on the 2500 block of 10th St. (more)

Dec 30: Berkeley and Oakland Police Partner-Up For Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Enforcement - On January 2, 2009 the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) and the Oakland Police Department (OPD) will partner-up and hit the streets as part of Operation “LAST CALL”; a directed enforcement effort aimed at protecting motorists from impaired drivers. Dec 24: Body Found in Apartment Identified - Detectives of the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Homicide Detail have learned the identity of the body found at 2235 Ashby Avenue. The Alameda County Coroner used dental records to confirm the identification of the remains as Taruk Joseph Ben Ali, 08/14/68. The cause of his death has not been determined pending the completion of the Coroner’s investigation. (more)

Dec 12: Berkeley Police Department Undertakes Special Holiday DUI Enforcement -Public Also Asked to Call 911 to Report Suspected Drunk Drivers - Beginning December 12, 2008 through Jan 13, 2009 the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) will join law enforcement across the state as part of California’s Holiday Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Crackdown Campaign, an effort to better protect holiday motorists from impaired drivers. NOVEMBER
Nov 25: Berkeley Police Awarded Driving Under the Influence Grant By State Office Of Traffic Safety - The Berkeley Police Department (BPD) is set to begin a yearlong anti-Driving Under the Influence (DUI) program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on Berkeley streets. The program comes as the result of a recent $174,846 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Nov 24: Cops Give Turkeys Not Tickets - On Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 6:00am, members of the Berkeley Police Department (BPD), University of California Police Department and members of the community will gather in front of Old City hall to continue a 24 year tradition.
Nov 18: Arrest Made in Derby Street Double Homicide - This morning the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Desmen Riashem Lankford 24, of Berkeley, with two counts of murder in the September 18, 2008 shooting deaths of Kelvin Davis (26) and Kevin Parker (42) in the 1400 block of Derby Street. Nov 14: Alcohol Argument Precipitates Stabbing- At 11:49pm on Thursday, November 13, 2008, the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) got a 911 call from the clerk of a liquor store in the 1200 block of University Avenue who reported a stabbing. (more)

Oct 31: Community Participation Critical In Solving Berkeley’s Most Violent Crimes - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) detectives are urging the community to work with them to help solve the city’s open murder investigations of 2008. (more)

Oct 20: Six Arrested in Prostitution “B” Sting - We call it a “B” Sting when members of our Special Enforcement Unit go undercover posing as customers or “Johns” to curb prostitution (recognized in the California Penal Code as violations of PC 647A/B), along the San Pablo Avenue corridor. (more)
Oct 17: Outstanding Police-Community Cooperation Credited with Robbery Arrest - At approximately 10:30pm on Wednesday, October 15th, Berkeley Police Patrol Officers stopped a Mitsubishi Lancer in an area that had recently been plagued by a series of pedestrian robberies. (more)
Oct 07: Emerson St. Homicide Arrests Made - The Berkeley Police Homicide Detail executed a search warrant at 10:20AM on the 2200 block of E. 33rd St. in Oakland. (more)

Aug 14: Missing Student Found - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Homicide detectives have confirmed that a University of California, Berkeley (UCPD) officer has located Matthew J. Wilson, the 21 year old Rice University (Houston, Texas) student who had been reported missing in December 2007. (more)

Jul 31: Oakland and Emeryville Capers End With Arrests in Berkeley - At 0937 hrs the Berkeley Police Department received a “Be On the Look Out” for a vehicle associated with a spree of robberies that occurred between the hours of 0630 and 0915 hrs today in Oakland and Emeryville. (more)

Jun 30: July 4th Celebration in the City of Berkeley- The City of Berkeley will be hosting a FREE Pyrotechnics display in the Marina on July 4th at 9:30pm. The city will close the Marina to vehicular traffic as parking lots fill up. This usually occurs around 7:00pm. (more)

Jun 03: BPD "Click it or Ticket" Nets 415 - The Berkeley Police Department concluded its participation in the California Office of Traffic Safety’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign. The program, which began May 12 and lasted through June 1st, saw 348 people cited for seat belt violations and 67 others cited for various vehicle code related offenses. (more)

May 29: South Berkeley Victim Marks City's 7th Homicide - At 11:32 PM on May 28, 2008, City of Berkeley Police Officers responded to multiple reports of numerous shots fired in the area of Tyler and California Streets in South Berkeley. Upon their arrival, they found the 29 year old, African-American male victim with apparent gunshot wounds lying on the sidewalk. (more)
May 21: San Pablo Ave Robberies - On April 24, 2008 following three southwest Berkeley armed commercial robberies, the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) issued a Community Crime Alert. The series that began with the robberies of the Famous Foam Factory, the ECO Home Improvement store, and the Good Vibrations store, has now grown to a total of 9 businesses.(more)
May 15: Durant Ave Shooter Arrested for Homicide - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Homicide detectives say that cooperation from a diversity of witnesses and the great work of members of the University of California Police Department (UCPD) proved invaluable in the pursuit of a murder suspect. Apr 24: San Pablo Avenue Robberies - Three Southwest Berkeley retail businesses along San Pablo Avenue were robbed over the past week. As a result, the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) is issuing this Community Crime Alert. This series of robberies has occurred while employees and customers were present, generally towards the end of the business day or closing time, between 3:30 PM and 8:15 PM. (more)

Mar 04: UPDATE South Berkeley Shooting Death - Detectives of the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Homicide Detail are currently investigating a homicide. On Monday, March 3, 2008 at approximately 11:32 p.m., BPD officers responded to reports of gunshots and a shooting victim in front of an apartment building at 1615 Russell Street in Southwest Berkeley. Feb 25: Gunshot Victim Found on City Street - At 11:50 PM, on Sunday evening, February 24, 2008, the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) received the first of several calls from residents in the area of the 1500 block of Harmon Street in South Berkeley. Feb 21: Persistence Pays Off, Two Arrested for '06 Murder - City of Berkeley Police Department Homicide Detectives have arrested two suspects in connection with a 2006 murder. Brandon Crowder, 20 of Berkeley and Nicholas Beaudreaux, 22 of Richmond have been arrested and charged with the September 4, 2006 murder of Wayne Drummond Jr., then 23 of Oakland.(more)

Feb 06: Suspect Arrested for Vicious Attacks on Elderly - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Robbery detectives have arrested a suspect responsible for a series of eight vicious attacks on elderly community members. Jahton Green, 21, of Oakland was arrested on January 29, 2008, and according to BPD Robbery Detail Detective Sergeant Chris Stines, Green showed little remorse for preying on some of the community’s most vulnerable. Jan 18: Brothers Behind Bars - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Robbery and Property Crimes detectives are wrapping up a two week long investigation involving two brothers who share a life of crime. Robert Andrew Farmer, 39, and Patrick Ryan Farmer, 29, of El Sobrante are in custody for a variety of crimes including robbery, weapons violations, burglary and possession of stolen property. (more)
Jan 18: Identity Of Bank Robber Needed - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Robbery detectives are asking the community’s help in tracking down a bank robber. They are optimistic that someone may recognize the suspect who robbed a bank in the City of Berkeley this week. He was captured in the surveillance photos above, one of which was taken as the teller handed over cash from his drawer. (more)
