Project History

The Citywide Pools Master Plan was completed in April 2009. On April 21, 2009 the City Council held a work session on the Pools Master Plan. At this work session, Council requested staff to create a design variant to the preferred plan that altered the size and configuration of some of the pools and lowered the capital costs somewhat. On May 19, 2009, the City Council authorized the City Manager to proceed with Environmental Analysis of the preferred plan and design variant of the Berkeley Citywide Pools Master Plan.

The plan was prepared by the 10-member Aquatics Task Force with assistance from City of Berkeley and Berkeley Unified School District staff as well as architecture and pool experts. The Draft Master Plan addresses citywide needs and interests related to pools and aquatic programs. The existing pools, the Warm Water Pool, and options for new swim facilities are all key topics of the Master Plan.

Following completion of environmental review and plan adoption by the City Council, the City will begin the process of preparing a bond measure to fund pool improvements.  The timing for a bond measure is currently planned for the June 2010 ballot, pending Council authorization.

Summaries of the Task Force Recommended Plan and the Design Variant are included below. The Draft Task Force Recommendations for the Citywide Pools Master Plan document can be accessed by clicking the link below.
