YAP gym

 

The Martin Luther King Jr. (M.L.K.) Youth Services Center at 1730 Oregon Street is the home of the Young Adult Project (YAP), a resource center for at-risk youth serving Southwest Berkeley. This site will tell you about facility features, rental information, and programs and classes.

 

Features

  • The MLK Youth Services Center features space that can be reserved and rented by community members.

Rental Information

A 2-hour minimum rental is required, per room. Rooms or the gymnasium are rented during either "Regular Hours", or those hours during the day or evening when City-initiated programs are held; or "Non-Regular Hours", or those hours during either the day or evening when the Center is open to the public for reason other than spronsoring City programs. Young Adult Project (YAP)

The Young Adult Project provides a comprehensive range of services that include ongoing basic services such as counseling, tutoring, violence prevention and leadership development. YAP is a community-based organization administered by the City of Berkeley Parks Recreation & Waterfront Department. YAP's purpose is to create a healthy and safe social environment for youth and to reduce juvenile delinquency through the provision of educational, cultural, counseling, and recreational activities. Registration priority for this program is given to south and west Berkeley residents. Students must be referred by either a teacher or counselor. YAP also provides staff leadership for the Berkeley Youth Commission.

NEW!  Stingers Wrestling Club

The Berkeley Stingers Wrestling Club gives your child an opportunity to learn the value of hard work, discipline, goal setting, and camaraderie through the sport of wrestling. Coach Gabriel T Cruz, of BHS, will teach basic wrestling skills and develop your child’s coordination, flexibility, and balance with technique sessions, live training, and competition. Youth Commission

Interested in becoming part of the Youth Commission? Members of the Youth Commission must be residents of the City of Berkeley between the ages of 12 and 25. If you are interested in becoming a member, contact Michael Smith at (510) 981-6670 or email: msmith@cityofberkeley.info  

 

Refund Policy

All requests for refunds must be directed to the Recreation and Youth Services Manager, 1947 Center Street, Berkeley, CA. 94704. The original receipt must be submitted with a written request for a refund. The request must state the reason for the refund, and the date, time and location of the program. The Recreation and Youth Services Manager will render a decision to either: 1) refund the fee; 2) pro rate the fee; or 3) deny the request. 

No refunds or credit will be granted without 7 days notice prior to start of class. The City will deduct 25% of the amount paid from the Refund to cover administrative expenses, or a minimum $10.00 service charge. A refund will be granted for an individual or family if a doctor’s certificate is provided along with the written request for the refund.

 

Low Income Fee Support

Low income fee support is available provided applicant meets eligibility and verification requirements. You must submit an application and documentation at the time of registration. Low Income Fee Support applications can be obtained at any of the Community Centers or at Recreation Administration, and on the website.
