Construction on the Rail Stop and Transit Plaza was completed in Spring of 2006 and the John Werle's murals and Betsy Davids poetry were completed in 2007.
Finally, Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority provided Measure B funding in 2007 to install wayfinding signage and maps and 8 electronic bike lockers in development now.
Working in collaboration with the BRA, the West Berkeley Project Area Committee (PAC) has hosted numerous public meetings and workshops to gain input over five years to bring this project to fruition. A grounding breaking ceremony occurred on February 25, 2005. The City of Berkeley released environmental reports analyzing the recommended upgrade of the University Avenue at 3rd Street Rail Stop and Transit Plaza. The 30-day public review period to submit written comments to the City regarding these documents ended January 3, 2003.
The environmental documents and accompanying professional reports study the possible impact of construction work in this area and advise on measures to avoid significant impacts. When the environmental review process is complete, work on city-owned property can begin. Amtrak and Caltrans are proceeding ahead with work in the railroad right-of-way, an area that is exempt from environmental study.
