Berkeley Police Operations Division
The Operations Division is the largest division within the Berkeley Police Department and is commanded by Captain Erik Upson with the support of four (4) Lieutenants, often referred to as Watch Commanders.
The Division was created in September of 2010 under the Department-wide reorganization implemented by Chief Michael K. Meehan. In addition to Captain Upson and Lieutenants, the Division also consists of (16) Sergeants, 89 Officers, 20 Reserve Police Officers, one (1) Administrative Assistant. The majority of the Division's assets are in Patrol Operations, which consists of patrol teams that cover the City 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.These officers respond to all calls for service and are often regarded as the ‘heart’ of the department.
Patrol/Beat officers and their team members in the Operations Division are the most visible representatives of city government, and provide a wide variety of services to the community. The men and women of the Operations Division include seven uniformed Patrol Teams, the Police Reserve Officer Program. The Special Response Team (SRT), the Bomb Squad, and the Field Training Officer (FTO) program also function within the Patrol Division.
For a complete list of Officers and their assigned beats please click the Beat Officers' Assignment list. Officers report to their Patrol Sergeants and are in regular communication with other BPD Divisions to work on community projects, special enforcement projects and community safety.
BPD has divided into four (4) areas and further divided those areas into Eighteen (18) Geographic Beats. Patrol Officers are assigned primarily to these eighteen beats. They respond to calls for service from community members, visitors, other city services, merchants as well as proactively work to reduce crime within the City.
Finally, the Division includes four (4) Area Coordinators. The Department utilizes the "Area Command" approach to operations, with each of the four (4) Patrol Lieutenants acting as an Area Commander, with responsibility and accountability for crime in their assigned area. The Area Commander collaborates with the geographic Area Coordinator counterpart who is assigned to him/her. The Area Coordinators have the responsibilities of facilitating needs, responding to concerns and complaints as well as supporting and assisting the Area Commanders. Together, the Area Commanders and the Area Coordinators coordinate policing services in their respective areas, working closely with the community and other city services in doing so. This goal of these relationships and the subsequent work they do is to insure that crime and other associated problematic issues are being addressed comprehensively and with long-term strategies in mind.
