Parking Enforcement Unit
The Berkeley Police Parking Enforcement Unit is an integral component of the Traffic Bureau. A Parking Enforcement Manager and two Parking Enforcement Supervisors lead a team of approximately twenty-one Parking Enforcement Officers (PEOs).
PEOs provide service to the community through a variety of activities, from enforcing local and state parking laws and regulations, to responding to parking issues as reported by the community, to working traffic control posts during police incidents, and helping to manage traffic and parking at special events, such as the 4th of July, the Solano Stroll, and Football games. While doing their regular enforcement, PEOs also handle parking-related calls for service called into the Police Department, thus freeing up Police officers to work on other activities. PEOs help to reduce blight by handling abandoned auto complaints, tagging and towing cars which appear abandoned. PEOs also conduct scofflaw enforcement, booting or towing vehicles with five of more outstanding unpaid parking citations.
Parking Enforcement Officers are assigned to work weekly rotations on enforcement beats throughout the City. The Parking Enforcement Unit can be reached at (510) 981-5890 Monday-Saturday, generally from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Parking issues can also be reported through the Police Department’s non-emergency number, at (510) 981-5900, at all hours.
