About Echo Lake Camp

BELC: 2015_USDA Forest Service_LogoThe City of Berkeley Echo Lake Camp has been operated under a Special Use Permit with the U.S. Forest Service since 1922.  Echo Lake Camp is steeped in tradition and has a unique history. Legendary environmentalist, David Brower, was introduced to the Sierra Club at Echo Lake Camp as a young clerk, and Edmund Hillary dined at Echo Lake Camp the summer after the first ascent of Mt. Everest. Generations have marveled at the 40-mile vistas, the dark night sky dome and the sunrise above the mountains to the east.

Echo Lake is only a fifteen minute walk from camp. Offering a several mile expanse of cool mountain water, swimming, fishing, and canoeing, Echo Lake is a favorite destination for campers. It is also the gateway to the immense Desolation Wilderness Area offering miles of hiking among the numerous alpine lakes, streams, peaks and meadows. The famous Pacific Crest Trail runs through the camp on its 2700 mile route from Mexico to Canada. The site is actually located directly on the Pacific Crest of the High Sierra meaning that a cup of water spilled on the eastern side of Cabin 26 runs to the deserts of the Great Basin while a cup spilled on the west side runs past Berkeley to the Pacific!

The camp itself offers, a heated pool, basketball, volleyball, bocce ball, disc-golf, archery, an observation deck, campfires and music programs. Arts and crafts are available in the recreation lodge, which has fantastic views.

At 7,400’ elevation, mild days and cool nights are punctuated by the occasional afternoon thundershower that clears in time to provide spectacular sunsets and alpenglow over the peaks to the west. Hot showers and bathrooms are located throughout the site as are picnic tables and seating.

Although the camp is distinctly wilderness in nature and tradition, all modern conveniences are available just 15 minutes away in world-famous South Lake Tahoe.

Family Camp (All Ages) Resident registration opens November 17, 2014 at 9:00 AM!    We are excited to offer a variety of camp programs at Echo Lake Camp in Summer 2015, including the return of Berkeley Sierra Family Camp, new Fish Camp sessions, 50+ Camps, and three Youth Residential Camp sessions. Like last summer, camp will be filled with great activities and incredible outdoor opportunities. The green chair circle, quiet hours, canoeing, the staff show, table night, theme days, tie-dye, campfires, and excellent swimming and hiking will all be a part of our Family Camp program, and new this year, Fish Camp campers can enjoy Echo Lake at their own pace. Of course, people make up the heart and soul of camp, and some of your favorite BTC staff-- full of Camp Spirit -- will be there to greet you. And you—the campers—will help keep the traditions, customs, and fun alive for generations of Berkeley campers to come.

Non-resident registration begins Friday, November 21, 2014, at 9:00 AM.

Note: The City of Berkeley Recreation Office will open at 8:30 AM, however, camps registration begins at 9:00 AM.

Youth Camp (AGES 7-14)  (Registration opens January 20, 2015)  Youth Camp is a five-day overnight summer camp available in three sessions. The goal of our staff is to create an exciting and nurturing environment where kids can develop self-confidence, teamwork, and try fun challenges. We want our youth to get a sense of connection with themselves, their friends, and the environment. Each cabin has a leader who emphasizes safety, leads recreational activities, and serves as a mentor. Daily activities include: canoeing, swimming, sports, all-camp games, fishing, archery, arts & crafts and hiking. In the evenings campers participate in events like a night hike, campfire, a dance, stargazing, or a talent show. Campers build fond memories and lasting friendships.

Transportation Provided: Supervised transportation for youth campers is provided. Pickup is at 8:00 AM on Monday in front of the Berkeley Unified School District, 2100 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, returning by 5:00 PM Friday, to the same location.

Fish Camp (All Ages): Pending City Council Approval Dec. 16, 2014.  Registration is scheduled to open December 17, 2014 at 9:00 AM.  Echo Lake Camp will offer two sessions of Fish Camp during Summer 2015. Fish Camp was a popular Tuolumne tradition, offering campers a laid-back, relaxed camp experience. Echo Lake Camp’s new Fish Camp honors that tradition, offering tent-lodging, three meals a day, and the opportunity for campers to enjoy camp at their own pace.

Explore the incredible hiking, cycling, and sightseeing in the surrounding area or kick back with a book and enjoy the incredible views at camp. Some basic recreation programs will be offered, including canoeing and archery, and campers are welcome to enjoy our Recreation Lodge, observation deck, and Dining Hall at their leisure for games and social gatherings.

2015 Fish Camp Dates: June 18-20 and August 28-September 4, 2015

50+ Camp Sessions: Registration Opens December 17, 2014 at 9:00 AM!    Whether you want a quick getaway or a longer stay, Echo Lake Camp offers a great opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some fresh mountain air.  Stay put and enjoy camp-centered activities, hike along the Pacific Crest Trail or to nearby Echo Lakes, or simply kick back and enjoy a good book.  It’s up to you!  Swim in the heated swimming pool, or take a dip in Echo Lake.  Hike the Sierra, or participate in activities such as yoga, arts & crafts, or camp sing-a-longs.  All activities are based on the interests of campers and are camper-led.

Work Weekend June 12-14, 2015 Registration Opens December 17, 2014 at 9:00 AM!  Echo Lake Camp needs the help of skilled and genearl laborers to complete several work projects before our season begins.  This is a great opportunity to support Echo Lake Camp and the thousands of participants that enjoy this beautiful City of Berkeley location annually.

Counselors-in-Training for Family and Youth Camp (AGES 15-16):   Registration Opens January 20, 2015 at 9:00 AM!  For Summer 2015, Echo Lake Camp has five (5) CIT sessions scheduled in conjunction with Family Camp, and three (3) CIT sessions scheduled in conjunction with Youth Camp programs.  Each session is one-week in length.  Our C.I.T. program provides a safe and structured environment for young teens to develop job skills, gain valuable experience, work and bond in a close-knit team, experience Echo Lake Camp from behind-the-scenes, and position themselves for possible employment at Echo. CIT Directors provide daily training and supervision, and the CITs spend several hours each day working with each staff member. With this rotation, the CITs are able to learn a variety of job skills and contribute more broadly to the camp’s success. CITs sleep in camper cabins, helping the counselors supervise the youth program.

Family Camp Artists-in-Residence Program:  New for Summer 2015, Echo Lake Camp will offer an Artist In Residence Family Camp Program. We encourage artists to apply for our Artist-in-Residence (A.I.R.) Program. The artist may stay for free in exchange for art-related classes for our campers. More information will be made available soon.

Scholarships: Berkeley City Council provides a limited number of camperships to low-income families (Berkeley residents only). Scholarships are available for all camps. Scholarships will reduce fees by 50%. Please submit the scholarship application prior to submitting the Echo Lake registration form. Please allow five business days for eligibility determination.
