Councilmember Kriss Worthington’s internship program gives individuals the experience needed to work within city government through hands-on tasks. Intern tasks include office management, constituent services, policy research, community organizing, and more. Kriss welcomes intern candidates of all backgrounds who wish to participate firsthand in Berkeley policymaking and constituent assistance. Because working for the people is a 24/7 job, we accept interns year-round!

Zachary Trevino
Zachary Trevino is a fourth year Urban Studies and Geography student at UC Berkeley, with a particular interest in the way humans interact with and depend upon the built and natural environment. He believes that, through equitable and inclusive planning and governance, human society can be improved and balanced to ensure that we live in a sustainable manner. Originally from California's beautiful Central Coast, Zach enjoys reading, writing, exploring nature, and bicycling. Upon graduation, Zach plans on pursuing his Masters in City Planning to further his ultimate goal of advocating for the people on the front lines of public policy and urban development. 
Sarah Schwartz

Sarah was born and raised 3,000 miles east of Berkeley in small town Connecticut. The opportunity to be a student-athlete for Cal’s Varsity Women’s Crew team was one she could not pass up, and she has called Berkeley her home ever since. Sarah is a senior at Cal studying Political Economy with a focus in public policy and socioeconomic inequality in the U.S. Sarah is passionate about tackling some of the most pressing issues our nation and local communities face today, e.g., climate change, widening income and wealth inequality, reviving the middle class, and is confident that an internship with Kriss will help her engage with some of these issues. Daniel King

Dan King has been interning for Councilmember Worthington since May. He ​was born in Boston, but have lived in California since he was 8. He is currently in his​ senior year at Berkeley and studying​ political science. Along with working for Kriss, he​ also serves​ as a commissioner on the Disaster and Fire Safety Commission for Berkeley and is​ the fundraising chair for the DeCal Board at UC Berkeley. His​ dream is to one day work for the EPA and help create comprehensive environmental legislation for our country.

naveen Naveen Shastri

Naveen was born and raised in Fremont. He is a rising senior in St. Francis High School, and is interested in computer science, political science, and economics. He enjoys leading the Congressional Debate and Model UN teams, as well as being involved in his school's Social Justice and Programming Clubs. He has worked in a policy trade organization, as well as a grassroots political campaign. Through this internship, he hopes to further his understanding of city government and public policy.


 Renee Lin
Renee is from Sacramento and currently attends UC Berkeley. She is a second year majoring in Political Science and Asian Studies. She is concentrating in International Relations, particularly East Asia and US relations. She is also very interested in working with underprivileged communities within the Berkeley region, and is active in many community service organizations. Through this internship, she hopes to work more with the underserved community and bring a smile to their faces. Renee's other interests include dance, Netflix, and traveling.
Ylham Jorayev Ylham was born in Turkmenistan and moved to Kansas to study at Independence Community College. He is a second year majoring in Chemical Engineering. He is staying in Berkeley for the summer to intern in Kriss' office. He is interested in public speaking and is currently on the ICC speech and debate team, placing 6th in Nationals. He also placed 2nd in the IYIPO International Biology Olympiads. He is also very interested in international politics and sees this office as a way to explore his political interests. Ylham's other interests include soccer, Formula 1, traveling, and learning new cultures.
Enrique Lopez

Enrique was born and raised in Torreon, Coahuila Mexico. He is about to be a senior at Berkeley High Schools at the Arts and Humanities Academy (AHA) and he is a former EL (English Lerner) student. His passion in helping other EL students motivated him to start The EL Students Committee, which focuses in helping students to become more active in the community, fighting for better student representation and developing conflict resolutions skills. He is interested in perusing a carrier in medicine/health in his not very far future. After his internship he wants to apply every professional aspect he learned in the office to his educational/professional life, making him a more suitable candidate for universities.

Andrew Kim  
Kaili Meier

Kaili was born and raised in Berkeley and is currently attending Berkeley High School. She is a Features section editor for The Berkeley High School Jacket Newspaper and plans to combine her profound interest regarding public policy, local government and current experience with journalism to give back to people in the Berkeley community.

Kaili strongly believes that change begins with action, and she plans to work to ensure that every person, regardless of race or gender, has the equal opportunity to lead a safe and healthy life, not only in the City of Berkeley, but across the nation and the world. 

Through this internship, Kaili hopes to gain valuable experience learning about the local government legislative process and plans to utilize these skills to manifest positive change in the future for people of all genders, sexualities and races.   
Mildred Santarriaga  
Raja Sutherland
Raja is a Berkeley native. He is a third year at San Francisco State University and majoring in International Relations. Through this internship, he hopes to learn more about sustainability and policies which contribute to a greener environment. He is a published author through his university and is familiar with politics through serving on multiple student governments, his latest being at City College of San Francisco. Upon graduation he hopes to find a job which will let him satisfy his longtime desire to see the world and make a difference.
Pratik Thapa
Pratik was born in Nepal. He is a senior at San Francisco State University. He is pursuing a degree in Urban Studies and Planning. He has been interning for Kriss Worthington since the summer of 2014. He is interested in economic development, urban design, and transportation planning. His hobbies include, playing association football, travelling, listening to music and being in Berkeley.
Andrea Rose Andrea was born and raised in Tacoma, WA. She is an incoming third year at UC Berkeley pursuing a degree in Political Science and minoring in Conservation and Resource Studies. She is particularly interested in issues concerning income inequality, affordable housing, and the environment, as well as many other social justice issues affecting Berkeley. Through this internship, Andrea hopes to gain insight into how local government operates and to influence her community in a direct way. At UC Berkeley, Andrea is deeply involved with student government and with her sketch comedy club, which she enjoys writing and acting for. 
Arami Matevosyan
Arami is a Sustainable Environmental Design graduate from the University of California, Berkeley with experience in Urban Planning, ArcGIS, and architectural design projects. Her interests pertain to building envelope design, environmental planning, and transportation planning.
Maggie Li
Maggie graduated from El Cerrito High School in June 2015. She will be attending Berkeley City College in the Fall, as a Business Administration and an Economics major as well as a computer science minor. She plans to earn her bachelor’s degrees at a UC, and go to graduate school for MBA. She enjoys helping people since she was a kid. Her goal is to become an entrepreneur and a philanthropist in the future. Through this internship, she hopes to learn more about public policy and city government.

David Jacobowitz
David was born and raised in sunny Los Angeles. After receiving his Associate of Arts Degree in History at Santa Monica College, he decided to “take his talents” to UC Berkeley. He is currently a fourth year history major, focusing on 19thCentury America. Through the internship with Councilmember Worthington, he is hoping to gain an insight into the daily functions of city government. David is known for his warm smile and optimism that he brings to the office.

Makeda Nuruddin
Born In New York, Makeda has lived in California for 3 years. She has lived in Hong Kong, London, South Africa and Bali. Makeda is a junior at Berkeley High School. She is interested in Politics and Government. Makeda participates in competitive rugby and reader. She also speaks conversational Swahili!

Jackie Reyes
Jackie was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She is currently a junior at UC Berkeley, where she is double majoring in Political Science and English. She is interested in International Relations as well as California politics. She hopes to pursue a master’s degree in Public Policy upon graduation and believes that interning at Council member Worthington’s office will allow her to have a more hands on role in writing and researching legislation. She also expects to gain more knowledge about city government where she hopes to start her future career in politics. She enjoys reading classic works and writing poetry in her spare time, as well as, playing soccer, baseball and going hiking and fishing with her family.

Claudia Echeverria
Born and raised in South Los Angeles, Claudia is very passionate about empowering women and motivating students of color to attend higher education. Today Claudia is a third year student at UC Berkeley. She is double majoring in Political Science and Gender and Women Studies. She is also studying French and is fluent in English and Spanish. Her goal is to go back to her community and make a difference. Her goals include obtaining a Masters Degree in Public Policy, working with nonprofit organizations to empower women, and running for office in the state of California.

Grace Huh
Judi Abegania  Judi is a recent alumnus of UC Berkeley with a background in Molecular and Cell Biology.  Her experience in nutritional research and policy has led her to this internship with Kriss Worthington, where she hopes to familiarize herself with the intricacies of local government and politics. She is applying this year to graduate programs for a dual Masters degree Public Health and Public Policy.
Intern Chuyue
Chuyue Huang
Born and raised in Guangdong, China, Chuyue has studied in a US high school in Chicago for the past two years and is now a first-year student at UC Berkeley, intending to major in political science and minor in public policy and education. As an international student, Chuyue enjoys meeting other individuals with different political beliefs and exploring the vibrant city of Berkeley. She has been politically active back in China, and since fifth grade, Chuyue has been disillusioned with the educational system in China and hoped to reform it as the future Minister of Education. She also wants to examine the influence of politics on education and the ways to encourage young people get involved in politics. This aspiration brings her to Berkeley and this internship, through which she hopes to gain more insights into the legislative process of a local city government. After graduating from UC Berkeley, Chuyue wishes to earn JD or M.Ed.

Ryan Hyunh

Ryan was born and raised in Garden Grove, CA. He is going to be a second year at UC Berkeley pursuing a degree in Ethnic Studies and Political Science. Over at UC Berkeley, he is becoming more involved in progressive organizations and has developed a passion for social justice, as it allows him to try his best to see things from the perspective of others. He hopes this passion can inspire others to stand up for what they believe in. Through this internship, Ryan wants to learn more about how he can apply this passion to public policy, with the hopes of being able to pursue his dream of one day becoming a leader who will change the world.

Adan de Lira

Adan was born and raised in San Jose, California. He completed his undergraduate degree at UC Irvine in political science and criminology, law, & society. He is currently pursuing  his masters degree in public administration with a concentration in urban management at Cal State Fullerton. Adan is interested in a variety of city management issues specifically those concerning affordable housing, city planning, law enforcement, and the environment.

Lauren  Murphy

Lauren has lived in the Bay Area her whole life. She grew up in Walnut Creek and is now living in Berkeley. She is about to start her third year at UC Berkeley as a Rhetoric and Society and Environment double major. Issues involving the environment especially interest her and she is excited to help make Berkeley a more environmentally friendly city though this internship. For fun, Lauren enjoys running, reading, spending time outdoors, and cooking. Lauren hopes to attend law school after she graduates and pursue a career in environmental law.

Randy Tran 

Randy is a graduate of the Department of Political Science at the San Francisco State University. He has plans to pursue a graduates degree in Public Policy, and eventually a juris doctorate in Environmental Law. His passion is to help others and make differences in people's lives, one person at a time. 

Annaick Miller 

Annaick was born and raised in Berkeley. She is currently a junior at Tufts University, where she is majoring in political science with a minor in communications and media studies. She is particularly interested in policy regarding environmental affairs, urban inequalities, and gender issues. She hopes this internship will provide her with a better understanding of the inner workings of local government and the legislative process. 

Leanne Bolano

Leanne grew up in San Ramon, CA. She is a second year at UC Davis, studying Environmental Science and Management. Her interest in the environment started with a gardening internship in Berkeley, and grew during her first year of college at UC Riverside, where she was actively involved in sustainability outreach to the campus and city. Her interest in public policy started in high school when she competed in speech & debate, advocating for environmental projects such as solar panel use and increased recycling. She is excited to combine these two interests during her internship in Kriss Worthington's office.

Kim Almanza

 Kimberly is going to be a fourth year at UC Berkeley, majoring in geography. She comes from Sacramento, California. As an intern she hopes to be more involved with local government and public policy. She is most passionate about labor rights and education reform.  

Alexandria Ku 

 Alexandria is from the Bay Area and will be a second year at the University of California, Berkeley. She is majoring in Legal Studies and will be applying to the Haas School of Business in the fall. She has been working with Rotary International and Interact since her freshman year of high school and Interact since her freshman year of highschool and she continues to pursue her passion for public service through these organizations. Through this internship, she hopes to learn more about public policy and the local government.

Gita Venkat

Gita grew up in Fremont and is going to be a senior at Irvington High School. She enjoys working at the Chabot Space and Science Center, singing, and playing competitive cricket. Through her internship with Councilmember Worthington, she hopes to broaden her knowledge of city government.

Ravi Maddali 

Ravi was born in India, but grew up in the Bay Area. A rising senior at Quarry Lane School in Dublin, he is extremeley interested in political science, economics, and labor relations. He expresses these interests mainly through participation in Model U.N. and Model Congress. Ravi looks forward to continuing working in these fields of interest for years to come.

Brandi Campbell 

Brandi has a rich professional and academic background exemplifying her commitment to equity and environmental work. Currently she is completing her graduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning at Portland State University with a concentration in the Environment and Urban Design while working as a Program Manager for Roots of Success, a Berkeley-based organization that produces an empowering environmental literacy and job readiness curriculum for the hardest to employ. Previously she received her BS in Environmental Studies from San Francisco State University, with a concentration in Natural Resource Management and Conservation and a minor in Geography. Her past work experience includes being an educational advocate for youth of color, organizing events at the intersection of art and activism, facilitating community poetry workshops for UC Berkeley, assisting with numerous Bay Area urban ecological and wetland restoration projects, campaigning for local environmental legislation, and conducting research for The San Francisco Planning Department’s Green Connections project.
