BERKELEY RESIDENTS INVITED TO FILL RENT BOARD SEAT
Berkeley, California (Wednesday, February 27, 2008) - Qualified Berkeley residents are invited to submit an application to the Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board to fill a recently vacated seat on the Board on an interim basis, through November 30, 2008. Applicants must be residents of Berkeley and registered voters.
Under the City Charter, the Rent Board is responsible for overseeing the proper administration of programs to regulate residential rent; to protect tenants from unwarranted rent increases and arbitrary, discriminatory or retaliatory evictions; help maintain the diversity of the Berkeley community, and ensure compliance with legal obligations relating to the rental of housing.
Members of the Board expect to appoint a successor to the vacant seat at the March 17 regular Board meeting. The appointment will run until the next general municipal election in November 2008.
According to Rent Board Chair, Jesse Arreguin, "The Board desires to set up an open and transparent selection process that considers all qualified candidates."
The Board has established a four-member Ad Hoc Search Committee to review all applications, which could include telephone contact and/or personal interviews. The committee will then submit their final recommendations to the Board for consideration at its March 17 regular meeting.
To apply, please submit a letter detailing your background and why you wish to serve on the Board. Your application should include your full legal name, current living address (post office box will not be accepted) as well as telephone and other contact numbers. Applications may be mailed or dropped off at the Rent Board offices at 2125 Milvia Street, Berkeley 94704, to the attention of Jay Kelekian, Executive Director. The applications will be considered public documents.
All applications should be received no later than noon on Monday, March 10, in order to be reviewed by the Ad Hoc Search Committee. Applications will be accepted up to 5 p.m. on March 17; however, they will not have had the advantage of being reviewed by the Ad Hoc Search Committee.
If you have any questions, you may contact Jay Kelekian at 981-7368 (981-RENT).
