FREE HELMETS, PUPPETS AND THE CIRCUS
The 2008 Bike Rodeo Delivers Fun For the Whole Family this Mother’s Day Weekend
Berkeley, California (Wednesday, April 30, 2008) - Although Sunday is reserved for breakfast in bed and homemade Mother's Day cards, Saturday is a great time to bring the whole family to Berkeley's Sixth Bike Rodeo!
WHAT: City of Berkeley Bike Rodeo-- A community fair and bike safety festival
WHEN: Saturday May 10, 2008, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
WHERE: San Pablo Park & Frances Albrier Community Center
2800 Park St (at Oregon) Berkeley, CA
WHO: Kids and their families
As in previous years, each child will be fitted and given a free bike helmet after participation in a fun and interactive safety seminar. This year's free raffle grand prize will be a $300 REI kids bike.
"Berkeley is a great city to ride bikes in, but we know that almost half of Berkeley kids don't wear a helmet when they ride," said Janet Berreman, Deputy Health Officer of the City of Berkeley. "This event is a great way to distribute helmets and safety information to kids and families to prevent unnecessary bike related injuries."
In addition to prizes and games, the event includes a mock-city obstacle course for kids to learn how to navigate challenging terrain, face painting, Bubblesmith Sterling Johnson, The Prescott Circus and a puppet show. For parents, the City of Berkeley will offer free blood pressure screenings and nutrition and safety information for their children.
The Annual Bike Rodeo debuted in 2003 to promote children's bike and scooter safety. Last year almost 200 kids were fitted with new helmets and participated in educational games. That number is expected to double, and there will still be enough helmets for all kids who participate.
The Bike Rodeo is sponsored by the City of Berkeley Injury Prevention & Chronic Disease Prevention Programs. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
