Submission Materials and Instructions

Artists may apply for one or both of the projects, but must mail a separate application packet for each project. Each submission must contain the following items:

1.  A completed application form (pdf).

2.  Ten complete, one-sided, collated sets of the following written materials: Each set should contain one of each of the following, in the order given. Please do not submit in plastic sleeves, folders or binders.

     a)  Artist's statement of interest, briefly noting relevant past experience, conceptual approach for design and materials, and other information you wish to highlight about your work and career (1 page maximum).

  If applying as a team, please also include the name, address and phone number of one team member who will be the team’s liaison with the City of Berkeley and in whose name the contract, if assigned, will be issued.

     b)  A thumbnail sketch of your proposed idea.

     c)  Resume (two pages maximum).

     d) Names, addresses and phone numbers of three professional references.

3.  One set of the following:

     a)  A plastic slide sheet containing six slides (individual applicants) or twelve slides (team applicants, total from all members) of relevant previous work, numbered, fully labeled, including artist's name, title of work, date completed, media, dimensions and with a red dot in the lower left corner of each slide.

     b)  Two copies of a one-page corresponding slide list including title, date, media, dimensions, location, and other pertinent information deemed useful in orienting the Commission and Panelists to your work.

     c)  A self-addressed, correctly sized and stamped envelope for the return of slides and other materials.

     d)  A self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of all materials.

     e)  OPTIONAL:  Any printed materials such as catalogues, articles, etc. that might assist the selection panel in understanding applicant’s work. All materials should clearly indicate the portion(s) for consideration.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. The City of Berkeley and its consultants are not responsible for loss or damage to submitted materials. Every effort will be made to return slides and materials to applicants.

Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on project deadline dates. Applications may be hand-delivered or mailed, but must arrive by the due date. Dated postmarks are not acceptable.

NOTE: Review of artists’ submittals is a preliminary stage which will be followed by a contract stage if proposals are selected and approved. Any individual who proceeds to the contract stage must accede to all legal and contractual procedures required by the City of Berkeley. Review of artists’ initial submittals and finalists’ proposals does not constitute an agreement by the City of Berkeley to fund any projects proposed for the sites described herein. The Berkeley Civic Arts Commission reserves the right to reject all proposals and to not award contracts for any or all of these public art projects.
