BERKELEY CANDIDATES FOR OFFICE CAN SKIP FILING FEES
Candidates for the November 4, 2008 municipal election can eliminate the $150 filing fee one signature- and one dollar- at a time
Berkeley, California (Thursday, May 29, 2008) - In what feels like the beginning of election season in Berkeley, candidates running for local office can pick up the signature forms that will allow them to reduce or eliminate the filing fee. Forms will be available in the City Clerk Department beginning Friday, May 30.
Normally, candidates must pay a filing fee of $150, but for every verified registered voter’s signature, the fee is reduced by a dollar. This applies to all candidates running for Mayor, Councilmember, Rent Stabilization Board Commissioner or School Board Director.
If you are considering a run for office, here are a few things you should know:
· You can only use the official City Clerk’s forms (“in-lieu petitions”) to secure signatures.
· Any Berkeley registered voter may circulate petition forms on behalf of a candidate.
· You have until Thursday, July 24 to file your signed in-lieu petition forms with the City Clerk Department.
· Candidates still need to obtain and file nomination papers, which also have a signature requirement, between Monday, July 14, and Friday, August 8.
The City Clerk Department staff will verify the signatures and notify the candidates of any shortfall, and candidates will have time to come up with extra signatures or pay the balance cover the deficiency.
“If you want to be sure to avoid the filing fee, it’s a good idea to get some extra signatures,” said Assistant City Clerk Mark Numainville. “We’ll verify each signature until we get to 150.”
