Community Issues - Train Noise in West Berkeley

Those residents who live in West Berkeley are regularly disturbed during the night by lasting and loud train whistles from Union Pacific trains.  The engineers are obliged by law to blow the whistles as a warning.  Indeed, we recently had yet another train fatality on the tracks.  With the expansion of the Port of Oakland the region is planning for an expansion of rail traffic, complete with a proposal to add another set of tracks heading east to those Union Pacific already has.  The City is engaged in discussions with adjacent cities with the intention of acquiring mitigation funds to reduce train impacts.  One direct action we can take is to close those crossings that are rarely used, which will cut down on the number of times the engineer has to use the horn.  No decisions will be made in the absence of notification and a public decision-making process.
