BERKELEY FIRE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE
Events in Recognition of the 15th Anniversary of the 1991 Firestorm
Berkeley, California (Thursday, October 12, 2006) - Saturday, October 21, 2006 is the 15th anniversary of the 1991 Firestorm. In recognition of this anniversary, the Berkeley Fire Department is holding an Open House that day at Fire Station #5, located at 2680 Shattuck Avenue (near Derby), from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. The community is invited to come and tour the station, see firefighting demonstrations (with ladders and hoses), meet Sparky the Dog, visit a Fire Safety House with simulated smoke, and more. The festivities also include free hot dogs, balloons, and fire hats (for the kids, but the parents can get one, too). If you’ve always wanted to see the inside of a fire station, this is your chance!
A commemorative event will also be held at the Rockridge BART Station from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.. This event will include a Remembrance Ceremony from 12:00 p.m.- 12:30 p.m., hosted by Channel 5’s Sherry Hu, as well as booths and displays hosted by more than 20 community organizations and agencies including the City of Oakland, Oakland Fire Department, BART, and the Berkeley Fire Department. The event also features 10 engines on display, a Fire Safety House, Smokey the Bear, local musicians, and a special food booth by Market Hall. The
Berkeley Fire Department encourages community members to attend these free events, and to educate yourself and family about fire safety.
