BERKELEY POLICE DEPARTMENT (BPD) INTERNAL INVESTIGATIONS

Berkeley, California (Monday, September 18, 2006) - In an attempt to balance his officers’ rights and the need to keep the community informed, Chief Douglas Hambleton has announced that two Berkeley Police Officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of in-depth BPD Internal Affairs investigations. There is no indication that the situations that lead to these investigations are related to each other or to any misconduct by other current or former employees.

The possibility of misconduct by police employees is troubling, but the community can be assured that all allegations of serious misconduct are met with swift action and the possibility of disciplinary consequences, including the options of suspensions and terminations.

Since these recent investigations are administrative personnel matters, the names of the employees and the details of these investigations must be kept confidential. If either of these investigations rises to the level that they are subject to public disclosure, BPD will offer details at that time.

It is common practice for police departments to place employees on administrative leave while they investigate allegations of serious misconduct. The outcome of the investigations will determine what additional actions may be warranted.
