Applications Due Monday July 31, 2006

Berkeley, California (Thursday, July 06, 2006) - The City of Berkeley's Office of Emergency Services is pleased to announce the 2006 Community Disaster Supply Competition. This competition awards disaster-prepared neighborhoods and communities with containers filled with emergency response equipment to increase their self-sufficiency in disasters.

Applications for this year’s program have been mailed to 276 neighborhood groups. Application packets are also available for pick-up at the Fire Department Administrative Offices, 2100 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, 2nd Floor, Monday-Friday, 8-5, or on-line at Applications are due to the Fire Department by 5:00 p.m. Monday, July 31.


The emergency supply caches will be awarded to neighborhoods that show a high degree of preparedness by meeting certain criteria: they have been organized for at least three years, they have satisfied six of the “Nine Steps to Become a Disaster Resistant Neighborhood/Group,” and a minimum of 8 people have trained and been formed into Disaster First Aid, Fire Suppression, and Light Search & Rescue teams.
