Berkeley, California (Monday, April 03, 2006) -  The City of Berkeley celebrates "Week of the Young Child," April 2 – 8, 2006 which raises awareness about the needs of young children and thanks educators and others involved in building better futures for all children. The City will  host an Appreciation Reception on April 6, 2006, from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Café de La Paz for Berkeley’s early childhood educators to recognize and honor the work they do for the City’s children. At this event the Mayor will recognize the Early Childhood Education Champions of the Year, Rosa Nelly Caloca, a Preschool Teacher at Franklin School, and Gina Moreland, the Founder and Director of Habitot Children’s Museum, for their outstanding contributions to Berkeley’s children, families and educators of young children. Additional activities are scheduled throughout Alameda County.

Early learning experiences are crucial to the growth and development of young children and "Week of the Young Child" provides opportunities for us to recognize the importance of the early years and to work together to build better futures for all children. "Week of the Young Child" was started by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 1971 and is celebrated annually around the country.
