PUBLIC ART OPPORTUNITY: CITY OF BERKELEY, ARTWORK FOR THE CORPORATION YARD GATES

Berkeley, California (Monday, March 13, 2006) - The City of Berkeley Public Art Program is pleased to announce an Open Call for artists who live in Northern California for Artwork for the Corporation Yard Gates. The specific site for the artwork is at the City owned Corporation Yard in central west Berkeley. The deadline for submittals is April 3, 2006 and the total amount for the artwork is up to $64,000.

This public art project is intended to provide an attractive and contextually appropriate screen effect over the large access gates at Bancroft Way to the Corporation Yard. The “art screen” is intended to enhance the current industrial chain link gates and to lessen the visual impact of activities of the Corporation Yard for the neighborhood and passersby. The project also aspires to create a positive visual element for those who work within the Corporation Yard. The Civic Arts Public Art web site contains a complete Call for Artists, an Application form and photos of the site.

A Selection Panel composed of up to three arts professionals, a City staff project architect, a Civic Arts Commissioner, and two community members will review and select three finalists. The Panel is selected for their expertise and representation and are appointed by staff and the Civic Arts Commission. Three finalists will be given an honorarium to complete a professional model and to present this model in person to the Panel. The recommendation of the Selection Panel will then be taken to the Civic Arts Commission for final approval. This project is part of the Public Art Program of the City of Berkeley Civic Arts Office and Civic Arts Commission. The funds are from the annual 1.5% for art program of the City of Berkeley.
