Community Services Block Grant Recovery Act Funding

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the City of Berkeley received $308,958 in Community Services Block Grant Recovery Act funds from the Administration on Children and Families through the State of California Department of Community Services and Development.  These funds were used to create the Skills-Opportunity-Success (SOS) Program.  Building Opportunities for Self Sufficiency was selected to implement the program.  The program was developed to work with targeted populations (single female head of households, the homeless, displaced youth, formerly incarcerated adults, residents of South and West Berkeley) to provide individualized job training and placement services.

From September 2009 through September 2010, the SOS program accomplished:

  • 44 participants placed in employment
    • Part-Time Employment: 16
    • Temporary Employment: 14
    • Full-Time Employment: 14
  • 45 participants obtained job and skills training
  • 10 homeless participants obtained housing

The program ended in September 2010.  You can read more information about state-wide CSBG Recovery Act Funding on the State of California’s report here:
