Berkeley Paratransit Services
for Senior Citizens and Persons with Disabilities

The ability to perform daily activities of shopping, getting to appointments and community meetings, and seeing friends and family requires that we each be able to "get around."  Forms of transit, such as AC Transit buses, BART, East Bay Paratransit (ATC), taxicabs, and wheelchair-accessible vans all play vital roles in meeting the community's need for transportation alternatives. Some residents have difficulty using either transit buses or BART trains and stations.

 
Access to transportation is no less vital to senior citizens and those with disabilities. Berkeley Paratransit Services (BPS) assists persons with disabilities and those 70 years of age or over by providing four programs that enhance their access to different transportation services.

The four programs are:

Taxi Scrip Program: Provides a limited amount of free scrip (i.e., temporary paper money) to pay for rides on conventional taxicabs, wheelchair-accessible taxicabs, vans, and other selected vehicles. 

Seniors over the age of 80 or those certified as disabled by East Bay Paratransit of ANY income; AND seniors age 70 to 79 whose incomes are not more than 30 percent of the Area Median Income

Wheelchair-Van Program: Provides a limited amount of free van vouchers and/or free taxi scrip exclusively to wheelchair users needing wheelchair-accessible van service for rides that are beyond the scope of services provided by East Bay Paratransit/ATC (also known as Intelitran). Those who travel by wheelchair and are certified by East Bay Paratransit as requiring “wheelchair-lift” service, irrespective of income level.
East Bay Paratransit Tickets: Provides for a limited number of free East Bay Paratransit/ATC tickets to individuals certified by East Bay Paratransit. Limited to providing transportation services to people who meet criteria established in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Medical Return Trip Improvement Program (MrTrip).  Provides limited subsidies for taxicab or van rides to those returning from a health related appointment.  Those participants in the Taxi Scrip Program or the Wheelchair-Van Program.
